About Explore Wild New York

Explore Wild New York delves into some of the more interesting aspects of the abundant natural resources of New York State. Topics range across the ecological landscape, from descriptions of unique areas such as kettle bogs and escarpments, the return of many wild species of mammals and birds, to the demise of insect populations and the many impacts of invasive plant species. Occasionally, I may include a topic that is not just about New York but should be of sufficient interest to the general public. Most of the blogs are written by me (John Sander), but eventually I will include guest articles from other outdoor writers and professional scientists. 

For many years, I was the writer and publisher of Sander’s Fishing Guides for western and central New York. My work as a writer, fueled by a lifelong interest in the natural world, has led me to explore hundreds of locations across New York State, and I’ve taken thousands of photographs to document what I’ve found. To better understand what I’ve seen, I’ve read more than 200 books on a wide variety of nature-related subjects, including bird intelligence, ecology, climate change, mycorrhizal networks, stream hydrology, phenology, evolution, geology, and the impacts of human activities on the natural world. For 30 years, I worked as a technical editor for Ecology and Environment, a global environmental consulting company.
